Charges for using new track at Derby's velodrome are revealed

THE charges people will pay for using Derby's new multi-sports arena's cycle track and other facilities have been revealed by the city council.

Accreditation to be able to use the 250-metre track will be completed in four training stages, taking a total of six hours, and costing £65.

But a Derby resident with an adult leisure card, for example, would pay £52.

That card is set to be renewable annually with a charge of £5.

The new fees and charges take into account what the council calls "a 4% inflationary increase".

It adds some of the "pay as you play" activities – when someone who is a non-member pays to do an activity – are set to go up by more than that amount.

Various discounts will be available for Derby residents, children, disabled people, students and the unemployed.

But the report says that the impact of the planned changes to the prices for pay as you play, at Moorways, Springwood and Queens, over the course of a year will be £95,000 extra for the council.

Andrew Beddow, head of leisure facilities, at the council said: "The review of leisure centre fees and charges has ensured that they reflect the cost of delivering the service and that inflationary cost increases are applied.

"A review of comparator rates within the sport and leisure sector has also been undertaken to ensure that Derby continues to offer a fair price for its activities when compared to other providers.

"For example the leisure card has been reviewed to offer a new leisure card for Derby residents offering a 20% discount on the standard price, while a new £1 charge for over 75 year olds has also been introduced.

"And the Learn to Swim lesson price at £4.70 represents good value for money when compared to the average price across Derbyshire of £5.55 a lesson."

The report adds that memberships for use of all the council's sports centres will have "new prices" once the Arena opens early next year.

It says this will "only apply to new customers buying memberships".

Track admission, only allowed after completing the accreditation, would cost £12.60 for one hour or £10.50 with the same discount.

Hiring a track bike or tandem for an hour would cost £6.50 with no discount, though other kinds will be available.

The prices are expected to be rubber-stamped by Councillor Alison Martin, cabinet member for leisure and culture, next Thursday.

An officer's report on the matter said the prices were in line with similar venues.

It said comparisons were made to the National Cycling Centre, Manchester; the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, Glasgow; the Wales National Velodrome, Newport; and the Lee Valley Velodrome, London.

It said: "The proposed prices for individual track sessions are in line with these facilities with discounts being provided for juniors, concessionary categories, and leisure card holders.
"Track bikes, helmets and shoes will be available for hire. Customers hiring a track bike will receive free helmet hire."

That same report proposes a raft of changes to leisure charges for council-run centres in Derby from October 1.
