Wildcat Grr-avel 100 & Two Ton ‘O Gravel

About

Two Ton ‘O Gravel
The Wildcat Grr-avel 100 and Bear Bones Two Ton ‘O Gravel are self-supported bike routes of 100 and 200 miles in distance, respectively. Each route has approximately 13,000 ft (4,000 metres) of ascent. It is inspired by events in the US such as the Dirty Kanza 200 and Trans Iowa 300 gravel grinders. The Wildcat Grr-avel 100 was originally put together as a training ride for the Highland Trail. The majority of the route is on excellent trails suited to MTB or CX bike, though users of the latter should carefully consider their set-up to allow for the changing nature and grade of the gravel trails.

Location

The start of the event will be in Llanwrtyd Wells.

When

Saturday 5 April 2014, 10:00am.

The Routes

Wildcat Grr-avel 100

After an introductory loop through Crychan and Halfway Forest, followed by the classic climb over Esgair Daffydd and around Llyn Brianne, the 100 mile loop takes an intricate and remote passage through the forests around the head of the Twyi Valley. This route, ridden clockwise and shown in yellow on the above aerial map, has a very high proportion of off-road, nearly all of it on well-maintained gravel forest roads. With nearly 13,000 ft of ascent (4,000 metres), this is a route that will test seasoned endurance riders as well as those perhaps looking to step up to their first 100 mile event.

Breaking out of the top of the Twyi Valley, the 200 mile route ventures further onto a committing loop northwards into Mid-Wales. Skirting the Nant-yr-arian MTB trials, and taking in some remote gravel roads higher above Nant-y-moch Reservoir, this route offers a true test of Welsh endurance riding. The route leaves the Wildcat Grr-avel 100 at approximately mile 57, and follows the red line on the above aerial image in a clockwise direction. It returns to the same point 100 miles later, before finishing the remaining 47 miles of the Wildcat route. With an unrelenting 26,000 ft of climbing (8,000 metres) on the 200 mile route, it challenges those who attempt it to complete it in under 24 hours.

The Rules

Complete the entire route, under your own power – no drafting
Be completely self-supported throughout the ride – absolutely no support crews, absolutely no gear sharing
Only use commercial services that are available to all challengers – no private resupply, no private lodging
If you have to leave the route, you must rejoin it at the exactly same spot
No caches of any kind
No pre-arranged support, which means before you begin your ride – e.g. booking a B&B, arranging to meet a vehicle
No travel by any motorized means during your ride – by all means do so if necessary, but understand if you do your attempt is over
Gear – nothing required, nothing prohibited
NOTE: A time trial completed with friends, family or media following the ride, effectively acting as a sag-wagon, is not a true self-supported effort.

Entry

There is no entry fee, no prize money, and definitely no support. You are entirely responsible for yourself. This is a self-timed Individual Time Trial (ITT). All that is provided is inspiration, a suggested start time, a GPS track file (supplied by email following entry), and a list of completion times. Riders are limited to 80 for the suggested start time.

Entries will be accepted via a form that will appear below, from midnight on 1 January 2014.

A reserve list will be kept if numbers exceed the suggested limit.

Live Route Tracking

As is increasing common on group start self-supported ITT events, live tracking of riders can be provided via Trackleaders.com for riders using a SPOT satellite tracker. This can be great benefit for loved ones and arm-chair spectators to see the event from a different perspective. Trackleaders levy a fee for the set up of this facility, but we will be canvassing interest on the entry form for this. Any indication towards paying a fee is not binding if you later change your mind.

FAQ’s

Q: Are there any time cut-offs / is there a time limit I need to complete by?
A: No. This is an Individual Time Trial. It takes you as long as it takes.

Q: Can I ride in a Group?
A: Yes, subject to Rules 1 & 2. Remember a group tends to ride slower than an individual.

Q: Can I buy things along the way?
A: Yes, subject to Rule 3

Q: What happens if I get lost?
A: Accurate navigation is part of the challenge of the event. You’ll have to get yourself un-lost, but pay attention to Rule 4.

Q: Can I ‘stash’ things along the route before the start or can someone meet me with spare clothes, food, etc?
A: No. See Rule 5 & 6

Q: Do I have to carry certain items?
A: No. Take whatever you feel you need to complete the route. See Rule 8.
